On January 28, 2017, The Year of The Fire Rooster will begin with the Chinese New Year Festival. Also known as the 'Spring Festival', this New Year's holiday is an important Chinese festival honoring the turn of the traditional Lunar/Solar calendar. The festival itself often runs from the evening preceding the first day (this year, the evening of the 27th of January) to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month (February 11, 2017). Festival customs vary across China and countries with significant Chinese populations, but can include decorating with red paper ornaments and banners, hosting large family reunion dinners, ritual housecleaning to sweep away ill-fortune and make way for good luck, honoring ancestors and deities, lighting fireworks, and giving money in red paper envelopes.
