Garnets are a group of hard silicate minerals that have been used as gemstones and abrasives since the Bronze Age. Garnet types possess similar physical properties and crystal forms, but differ in chemical composition. The different varieties are pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular (varieties of which are red-brown hessonite or cinnamon-stone and green tsavorite), uvarovite and andradite. The grossular tsavorite variety has a rich olive-green to grass-green tone that varies from opaque to transparent.
In metaphysical terms, the various forms of garnet are thought to confer protective and calming influences, heighten intellect, help alleviate depression, strengthen the survival instinct, and bring courage and hope into critical situations.
