DESCRIPTION
This heavily textured 18x2mm .925 sterling silver pendant is a replica of an ancient Greek coin, and depicts a heraldic griffin rampant (half eagle, half lion, rearing on hind legs).
In folklore, the griffin combines the symbolic qualities of the lion and the eagle. It is the king of birds, and the king of beasts. Perhaps inspired by Triceratops fossils in central Asia, griffins were a central figure in ancient Scythian and Persian legends. In medieval European heraldry, Griffins represented the sun, wisdom, vengeance, strength, and salvation.
Height measurement includes 6mm soldered jump ring. Textured and oxidized on both sides, for added visual interest.
Stamped 925.
