A 'palette' is a flat, strong, nonporous surface used to hold groups of prepared pigments while an artist paints. Though ancient Egyptian scribes used a compact wooden box to hold the colored inks of their trade, the 'Kidney Bean' palette did not come into wide artistic use until the late Renaissance in Europe.
