DESCRIPTION
Since Roman days, the Skull-and-Bones symbol has long been used to mark gravesites and memorials, and as a warning against poison and danger. It was adopted as a warning flag by pirates and privateers of the 16th through 18th centuries, and in the 20th Century by counterculture social and political groups. Sometimes the skull is arranged above the crossed leg bones; sometimes, as here, the skull is superimposed over the leg bones for a more compact design.
