Anchors are heavy metal pieces with multiple projections designed to catch the sea floor and hold ships in place. Merchant and naval sailors have regarded anchors as symbols of hope, stability, security, experience, and safe return to port. Early Christians sometimes used them as disguised symbols of the cross. To the US Navy, anchor symbols mark sailors who have crossed the Atlantic Ocean. In modern lore, anchors can also herald a deep, stabilizing relationship or love, and the idea of holding to one's principles. A broken or damaged anchor can represent letting go of old troubles, and of moving forward.
